Synopsis

Reflective Runway Markers. Aviation Renewables designed and supplied a refurbishment kit for a private runway using the Models 324 & 336 Retroreflective Runway markers. The airport had been using the markers for decades, and needed a specially designed reflective sheath in order to extend the life of the existing markers.

Challenge

The client is a municipal airport in Canada. Some decades ago, they invested in a reflective marking solution to enable 24/7 operations at their airport. The FAA L853 reflectors were faded after years of being exposed to the sun and were in need of refurbishment. The bases, however, were still in good condition and could remain in place and need new reflective markers. The airport sought help from Aviation Renewables to design, manufacture and deliver new retroreflective sheaths and markers in order to continue using their existing marker bases.

Solution

The existing markers used HDPE bases that were still in good condition. The bases were anchored to the ground, so it made sense to keep the anchoring in place and replace the reflective panel alone. Aviation Renewables provided new reflective sheaths that comply with L853 standards. The reflective sheeting on the aluminum sheath is micro-prismatic conspicuity material that complies with ASTM D4956. The thin, flexible sheeting has a unique appearance featuring a printed triangular white line pattern. It provides superior visibility and conspicuity to oncoming aircraft which results in improved safety.

The aluminum sheaths will not corrode, and we anticipate them having a service life of 15 years. The UV and solvent resistant coatings ensure durability which allows for rugged outdoor use. Conspicuity-grade ma- terial like this is typically 6 or 7 times more reflective than a comparable color in an engineering-grade reflective tape since prism technology is used instead of glass beads, which greatly increases the visible range of the runway markers.

The sheaths shipped with new tethers to ensure FOD control in case of accidental damage to the marker. The airport installed the sheaths on the existing bases with simple tools, and was able to conduct the retrofit without need for closure of the runway.

Aviation Renewables provided assistance during the execution of the refurbishment kit project to ensure all reflective runway markers were installed properly along with maintenance instruction provided to airport personnel. With a turn-around time of less than 15 days to deliver and commission a reflective marking solution, achieving met the customer’s expectations for safety, compliance, cost savings and long term capability for 24/7 operations.

LED PAPI Systems Powered by RMS Solar Engines Support Oceanic Civil Airports
Synopsis LED PAPI Systems. Aviation Renewables has been awarded a contract to design, integrate and deliver portable LED PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) systems powered by Solar Series RMS engines with L854 Pilot Activated Lighting Control (PALC) for a South Pacific remote island airfield. Challenge The remote private airfield is situated in extremely mountainous terrain. The sudden changes associated with the mountain weather leads to low visibility conditions that can be a challenge to pilots on approach. In order to maintain proper attitude and approach slope, the airport decided a PAPI system would be the best tool. The airport has no grid electricity and no ground personnel, so they required a system that used off-grid electricity and would be remotely activated. Solution The private airfield tasked Aviation Renewables with designing a PAPI system that would use a well- designed, reliable solar power system and be activated by VHF radio from the cockpit. As the system is so remote, emphasis was placed on ease-of-use and reliability. The RMS solar power system features a compact, all- in-one design that keeps failure points to a minimum. The unit is mounted low to the ground on frangible mounts to comply with frangibility requirements. Each RMS will collect enough electricity from the sun each day to supply ten 15-minute activations. In emergency situations where more usage may be required, the battery will provide 12 hours of continuous use. The L854 Pilot Activated Lighting Controller is inte- grated into the PAPI Power Control Unit and maintains a passive listening watch on the aerodrome frequency. When the L854 detects 3, 5 or 7 clicks on the VHF frequency, the unit instructs the PAPI to illuminate in low, medium or high intensity, respectively. The Solar Series LED PAPI features industry-leading efficiency with FAA certified photometrics. The LED PAPI is extremely easy to install and re-locate, which will allow the client to re-deploy the system to another remote airport when the need arises. Aviation Renewables has supplied multiple solar powered LED PAPI systems to this region to support temporary, semi-permanent and portable LED runway lighting operations. Solar Series Tactical Windsock Lighting for Middle East Defense Operations
Synopsis Windsock Lighting. Aviation Renewables designed and supplied a solar powered tactical windcone for a military force in the Middle East. Through a program of record agreement, multiple batches of these portable, NVG compatible wind direction indicators have been sent in support of mission readiness goals. Challenge Through a capabilities planning exercise, the military force established the need for a portable windsock that meet the following specifications: solar powered, with no external wiring connections, quickly deployed in 10 minutes or less, no ground penetrations, NVG compatible IR LEDs, blackout mode (no visible light emissions), etc. The unit is easily transportable and can be set up quickly by 2 persons. The all-aluminum construction is resistant to hot/humid environmental conditions present in the area. The patented, maintenance-free swivel ensures that very little maintenance is required to keep the units serviceable. A simple battery change every 5-7 years and replacement of the fabric windsock every 2 years is all that is required in normal operations, and the windcones have an expected service life of 25 years. Solution Aviation Renewables was able to design and supply a portable windcone that met all of the design require- ments, and was able to deliver on the desired timelines, with multiple shipments over a period of several months. The unit uses a three-way switch to manually toggle between visible and infrared (NVG) modes. There is no visible light emitted in NVG mode from either the internally lit windsock or the obstruction light. The unit is easily transportable and can be set up quickly by 2 persons. LED PAPI Lights for Temporary Operations
Synopsis LED PAPI lights. Aviation Renewables supplied, installed and commissioned a Solar LED Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) for temporary use during construction activity. A runway-repaving project necessitated several threshold displacements over the course of several months. The Solar LED PAPI proved the ideal choice for cost-savings, ease of use and the ability to quickly move it as the project progressed. Challenge The International Airport in the Caribbean is conducting a large runway repaving project to improve the airport for several more decades. The airport has a single runway, and is the only airport in the country. It is the primary gateway to the country and a major hub airport for the entire Eastern Caribbean. As a result, the paving project needed to be carefully coordinated to allow the airport to maintain operations. The plan entailed displacing the thresholds several times throughout the project. Each time the threshold is displaced, a PAPI would need to be installed in order to provide accurate glideslope guidance for the new touchdown location.The Engineering Team consulted Aviation Renewables for advice on the best solution to this issue. The engineering team was reluctant to trench and lay conduit to each PAPI site, as this would be a significant cost in both time and money. Solution Aviation Renewables was able to supply an ICAO-compliant LED PAPI powered by a 1500-watt solar power system, this efficient unit enables the airport to operate the PAPI 24/7. The Solar LED PAPI system is an ICAO compliant 4-box PAPI system. It is powered by a 520-watt solar power system which will enable 24/7 operations in case of emergency evacuations for extended periods of time. The 30,000cd Solar LED PAPI system was visually checked to be visible from 10 miles on approach to the airport. The system has a photocell that provides automatic dimming at night. Aviation Renewables was able to supply the PAPI within 3 weeks of order and attended the installation and commissioning of the first location. The Engineering Team was trained on installation, commissioning and operation, with the intention that they will be able to easily move it to the next location when the project progresses. The Solar LED PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) for Temporary Operations has no electrical inputs and it can quickly be moved in a matter of hours, with very little impact on the operation. In addition, the cost savings further compound considering the relatively high electricity price witin the island nation. The LED PAPI has been operating safely and effectively, and adds a measure of simplicity for planner of the large infrastructure project. Portable Airfield Lighting is Ideal for Unexpected Emergency Situations
Synopsis Portable Airfield Lighting. Aviation Renewables has been awarded a contract to supply, deliver, train and commission two portable LED airfield lighting systems for a central East African Civil Aviation Department. After careful consultation with the aviation authority, each portable LED airfield lighting system will consist of LED runway lighting, LED threshold lighting, LED taxiway lighting, LED REILs (Runway End Identifier Lights), LED PAPIs and remote control operating systems in order to ensure safe operations and proper system deployment. Challenge The client required pilot training for day and night landing and take off operations. At the completion of a factory acceptance test, delivery of each portable LED airfield lighting system allowed the East African Civil Aviation Authority to provide the training requirement. In addition, the Civil Aviation Authority will retain the ability to respond to unforeseen emergency situations such as electrical power failures, natural disasters and necessary maintenance requirements such as construction works, electrical airfield ground lighting maintenance, secondary back up runway lighting or training exercises. Solution After careful consultation with the client, Aviation Renewables designed a portable LED runway lighting system. The portable nature of the LED runway lighting system and the LED PAPI provides maximum flexibility for the client. The portable LED PAPI can be used to quickly displace a threshold when main- tenance activities or temporary obstructions are present. The portable lighting on a street-legal trailer can easily be towed to a different airport should the need arise. Having the portable LED lighting system in the management network will increase the reliability of all airports, not just the airport at which the lights are stored. Portable LED PAPI System Operating for Aircraft Manufacturer
Synopsis Portable LED PAPI – A 2 box (APAPI) was supplied and commissioned for use while flight testing steep approaches. Aviation Renewables supplied the product and expertise as part of the certification process for an aircraft’s ability to operate into an airport in the Caribbean. Challenge As part of the aircraft manufacturer’s certification process, a two box LED PAPI was modified for the purpose of testing steep approaches to support a unique operation in the Caribbean. As Precision Approach Path Indicators are normally set at 3º, most units are incapable of being set to the desired 9º in order to complete the testing. The manufacturer selected Aviation Renewables to lend expertise and to supply an appropriate LED APAPI for this project. Solution Aviation Renewables was able to supply an LED PAPI unit with a custom designed mounting structure for temporary use during this testing. The 2 box PAPI was designed to operate from 120VAC using a small portable generator. The unit was easily adjusted through the range of approach angles required during the testing, from 7 degrees to 9 degrees, and was accepted in combination with GPS and Radar Altimeter as certification support for the steep approaches. Aviation Renewables attended on site to support the installation and commissioning of the unit. In addition, Aviation Renewables guided a local surveying team through the Survey Method of PAPI commissioning, which verified the instruments used for setting the PAPI Approach angles. The testing took place over a period of several weeks, as a variety of wind and weather conditions were needed in order to simulate real-world conditions. The LED PAPI was adjusted to various angles several times each day, and performed flawlessly through the tests. Portable Solar LED Wind Cone for Emergency Heliport Lighting System in Europe
Synopsis Aviation Renewables designed a custom wind cone as part of a solar powered, emergency heliport lighting system in the UK. The system features a Solar Series LED Wind Cone that shares a common solar power system with a portable LED helipad lighting system, and radio controller. This emergency lighting system allows remote communities to be reached 24/7 by medevac helicopter, greatly enhancing emergency response times in these areas. Challenge The vast majority of Medevac flying in the United Kingdom is handled by charity organizations. The organizations operate on limited budgets, and are supported primarily by donations. As such, the priority for these organizations is maximizing the safety of night operations with cost-effective solutions. As primary beneficiaries of the medevac services, the remote communities take particular care and ownership of these lighting systems. The local community members operate, deploy and perform maintenance on these systems. As such, a system that is durable, reliable and simple to operate is required. Solution In order to keep costs as low as possible, a system design using a common solar power system for the entire kit was developed. The portable lights are charged in a cabinet by the solar power system; the Pilot Activated radio control system is kept in active mode by the internal battery; and the windcone is powered by this same solar power system. When a medevac situation presents itself, local community members deploy the portable emergency lights on the perimeter of the helipad. The lights can be switched on manually, or by the approaching helicopter via VHF radio. Pilot reports indicate the lights can be seen at these remote sites as far as 4 miles out. The internally illuminated windcone gives key indication of the wind direction and strength, vital information for the pilots whilst planning their approach and touch down. Portable Airfield Lighting at Northern Canadian International Airport
Synopsis Aviation Renewables has been awarded a contract to supply portable airfield lighting systems solutions for an international airport in Northern Canada. After careful consultation with the airport management team, a portable LED airfield lighting system was designed, shipped and installed within 7 weeks for the runway-resurfacing project on the airport’s primary runway. The ICAO compliant portable lighting allows the airport to easily displace the threshold multiple times through different phases of the project. Challenge The airport tasked Aviation Renewables to deliver LED PAPI systems powered by portable battery systems; threshold LED lighting systems powered by a Solar Series RMS portable charging station; and solar powered LED taxiway lighting. This LED lighting can be controlled via an RF remote control from either the ATC tower or ground personnel; or controlled by photocell for automatic dusk-to-dawn operation. Solution The airport required a portable LED airfield lighting system during the project to accommodate the vari- ous threshold displacements during different stages of the project. The portable threshold lighting and portable 4-box LED PAPI systems are easily picked up and re-located to indicate the new threshold location when required. The solar powered taxi- way lighting is used in conjunction with portable battery lighting on the secondary runway. This allows the airport to maintain night operations, even when the primary runway needs to be closed during resurfacing. Incorporating a mix of solar and battery portable lighting will allow the airport maximum flexibility during future operations, especially during the winter when sunlight hours are at a minimum. LED Airfield Lighting Systems Ensure Continuous Operation by Day or Night
Synopsis Aviation Renewables was tasked with the design, supply, training and commissioning of two portable LED taxiway lighting systems for TPIA, Canada’s largest and busiest international airport. The portable LED airfield lighting systems will be used for emergency airfield lighting operations, construction and maintenance activities. The two portable LED taxiway lighting systems can be stored, transported and charged within a rugged, road worthy transport trailer. Aviation Renewables successfully delivered two portable LED taxiway lighting systems within 8 weeks time in order to guarantee 24/7 TPIA operations during year round operations. Challenge The Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) required the portable LED taxiway lighting systems capable of meeting ICAO & FAA photometric lighting standards via radio control in order to support day and night operations. GTAA required the portable LED airfield lighting systems to be transportable, capable of charging while in storage and be ready to deploy within minutes to support 24/7 year round operations. The portable LED taxiway lighting systems and mobile charging system meet all CSA (Canadian Standards Association) lighting and electrical standards which required onsite customization of the portable charging trailers and a mobile charging system. With the holiday season approaching, Aviation Renewables was able to deliver, train and commission a complete turnkey LED taxiway lighting system within two months time, meeting the airports goals. Solution The portable LED taxiway lighting solution is the most installed, tested and proven, battery powered LED airfield lighting system in the market.
