Synopsis

LED helipad lighting. Aviation Renewables advised and supplied equipment for Bingham Memorial Hospital to upgrade their helipad lighting system from halogen to LED. In doing so, the helipad will realize savings not only in electricity, but also significant savings on maintenance and spares.

Challenge

Bingham Memorial Hospital has a helipad for use by Medevac helicopters. The existing lighting system was at an age that spares were becoming harder to find, and the maintenance costs required to keep it compliant were high. The hospital operations staff needed guidance on upgrading the lighting system, to ensure that new lighting would be in compliance with Standard 325 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations.

Solution – Customized LED Helipad Lighting System

Aviation Renewables was able to assist the Bingham Memorial Hospital with a design, compliance reports and installation guidance for a new LED helipad lighting system.

The System uses 120v elevated LED lights, that meet the requirements for ICAO Annex 14 Volume II and the Canadian Aviation Regulations, Standard 325 for Heliports. In addition to the TLOF lighting, frangible 120v low-profile floodlighting was provided to aid in depth perception for pilots and safe maneuvering for ground support staff. These LED lights require no maintenance other than the occasional lens cleaning, and have an expected life of 50,000 hours.

The hospital’s existing wind cone was end of life, including a damaged electrical circuit that was beyond economic repair. In order to keep installation costs to a minimum, a Solar Series LED Helipad windcone was supplied, complete with frangible fuse bolts. This wind cone is completely standalone, and requires no trenching or wiring during installation. A 5-year battery replacement and 2-year fabric replacement are the only maintenance items. The structure of the Solar Series Windcones, being aluminum, has been known to last in excess of 50 years.

The helipad requires snow clearing operations in the winter. In order to mark the location of the elevated lights, Aviation Renewables supplied the RELM1200 snowplow markers. These marker wands feature a highly reflective sleeve, which reflects light using micro-prismatic reflectivitity. The markers ensure that whether the lights are on or off, they are highly visible to the snow clearing team, avoiding costly damage.

Aviation Renewables is supplying helipad marking equipment for MEDEVAC operations in Northern Canada. The Model 336 Retroreflective Helipad Markers with AV70 solar helipad lights have been used at these remote communities for over 15 years with excellent performance. The retro-reflective helipad markers are specifically designed for medevac operations and are in use at over 100 sites serviced by medevac helicopters in Ontario and Manitoba. LED Helipad Lighting System Installed & Commissioned in Africa
Synopsis LED Helipad Lighting. Aviation Renewables was awarded a contract to deliver, install and commission a solar powered LED Helicopter Approach Path Indicator and solar LED helipad lighting system to a customer in Central Africa. The system is designed to operate without the use of the grid power, making it a reliable cost-effective safety tool for the operation. Challenge The heliport operates in a coastal jungle area, which is subject to frequent showers and low visibility. During approach, there are several obstacles that must be avoided using proper glideslope. Being a remote site, access to electrical power is limited. As a result, they required a solar powered system that would operate without need for electrical inputs of any kind. The helipad operates with limited ground staff, necessitating the ability for the pilots to be able to activate and control the intensity of the lighting from the air. Solution Aviation Renewables delivered, installed and commissioned an off-grid, solar powered LED HAPI, windsock and solar TLOF lighting. The HAPI is powered by a self-contained solar power system that is mounted on frangible couplings. The 120W solar unit charges batteries containing 2.5kWh of storage, enabling the HAPI to operate for up to 8 hours per day. The Solar Series LED Wind Cone is installed adjacent to the helipad. It is a completely self-contained unit that mounts to a single mounting point, which eliminates any need for underground cabling or connections points which are a common point of failure. The windcone is powered by a 100W solar module, which will power the internally lit wind sock and obstruction light from dusk to dawn. The solar LED TLOF lighting is activated by a pilot activated radio controller, which allows the pilot to use the VHF radio in the cockpit to control the intensity of the lighting. Windsock Lighting for Remote Helipad on the Coast of British Columbia
Synopsis Windsock Lighting Solution. Aviation Renewables supplied a Solar Series Permanent LED Windsock Lighting as part of a heliport repair program for the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans at a remote heliport on the coast of British Columbia. The Solar Series Heliport Windcone provides clear indication of wind direction and speed for helicopters, both night and day, 365 days of the year. Challenge The existing helipad is located in a remote community that is only accessible via boat, helicopter or seaplane. The helipad was scheduled to be reconstructed to bring it up to current standards. As part of the reconstruction, the heliport was equipped with a lighted wind direction indicator to add enhanced conspicuity. As the community is very remote, with limited electrical infrastructure, a solar powered solution was required. Due to the rugged mountainous terrain and the northern latitude, the available solar insolation was quite limited, leading to design challenges. Solution The Solar Series Windcone was specially requested due to the ability to easily increase the solar charging capacity to combat the limited solar energy available. The windcone is easily mounted to a single concrete pad, which enabled the civil works contractor to quickly assemble and install the unit. Retro Reflective Helipad Marking System Operating at Canadian Mine
Synopsis Aviation Renewables delivered a retro reflective helipad marking system for a mine site in Canada. The versatile system will allow the helipad to receive MEDEVAC helicopters in the event of an emergency. The system exceeds the requirements of the helicopter operator, and consists of reflective helipad marker cones, and autonomous solar lighting. Challenge As part of their Emergency Response Plan, the mine had a need for a reflective helipad markers in order to be a certified landing zone for MEDEVAC helicopters. The equipment needed to be compliant to the Helicopter Operator’s standards, and be built to withstand the harsh environmental conditions in Northern Canada. The client worked with Aviation Renewables to design a system that would exceed the requirements, by including additional Solar LED helipad lighting for added conspicuity. Solution Aviation Renewables was able to supply a retro reflective helipad lighting system with Solar LED Lighting. The micro-prismatic retro-reflective panels on the helipad markers are highly visible for approaching helicopters, and are visible by 4 miles in both Visible and Night Vision conditions. The passive markers not only require zero maintenance, but are also of little value to potential thieves. Being in rural undeveloped territory, the risk of theft is significant for any valuable technology. The reflective helipad markers and lights are firmly secured to the ground with stakes, and are able to withstand rotor downwash and tough climactic conditions. As a result of the installation, the mine was able pass the operator’s audit. They are now able to rely on emergency medical evacuation at any time, day or night. Portable Solar LED Wind Cone for Emergency Heliport Lighting System in Europe
Synopsis Aviation Renewables designed a custom wind cone as part of a solar powered, emergency heliport lighting system in the UK. The system features a Solar Series LED Wind Cone that shares a common solar power system with a portable LED helipad lighting system, and radio controller. This emergency lighting system allows remote communities to be reached 24/7 by medevac helicopter, greatly enhancing emergency response times in these areas. Challenge The vast majority of Medevac flying in the United Kingdom is handled by charity organizations. The organizations operate on limited budgets, and are supported primarily by donations. As such, the priority for these organizations is maximizing the safety of night operations with cost-effective solutions. As primary beneficiaries of the medevac services, the remote communities take particular care and ownership of these lighting systems. The local community members operate, deploy and perform maintenance on these systems. As such, a system that is durable, reliable and simple to operate is required. Solution In order to keep costs as low as possible, a system design using a common solar power system for the entire kit was developed. The portable lights are charged in a cabinet by the solar power system; the Pilot Activated radio control system is kept in active mode by the internal battery; and the windcone is powered by this same solar power system. When a medevac situation presents itself, local community members deploy the portable emergency lights on the perimeter of the helipad. The lights can be switched on manually, or by the approaching helicopter via VHF radio. Pilot reports indicate the lights can be seen at these remote sites as far as 4 miles out. The internally illuminated windcone gives key indication of the wind direction and strength, vital information for the pilots whilst planning their approach and touch down.
