LED PAPI Systems Powered by Solar Engines to Civil Airport in Oceania

LED PAPI Systems. Aviation Renewables has been awarded a contract to design, integrate and deliver portable LED PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) systems powered by Solar Series RMS engines with L854 Pilot Activated Lighting Control (PALC) for a South Pacific remote island airfield.

The remote private airfield is situated in extremely mountainous terrain. The sudden changes associated with the mountain weather leads to low visibility conditions that can be a challenge to pilots on approach. In order to maintain proper attitude and approach slope, the airport decided a PAPI system would be the best tool. The airport has no grid electricity and no ground personnel, so they required a system that used off-grid electricity and would be remotely activated.

The LED apron lighting project was installed by a Canadian contracting company in the spring of 2021 with remote technical assistance from Aviation Renewables due to the pandemic travel restrictions.

LED PAPI Systems and Windsock Lighting for Caribbean International Airport

LED PAPI System. Aviation Renewables was tasked with the planning, surveying, installation and commissioning of Solar LED PAPIs and Solar Windsock Lighting (LED Windcones) in Georgetown, Guyana. These visual aids will be used permanently following the completion of a runway extension project. The savings in installation cost, maintenance cost and electricity made the solar LED PAPI the desired option for this gateway to the country.

Cheddi Jagan International Airport, in Georgetown Guyana, is nearing completion of a runway extension project. As part of the project, new lighting was installed during resurfacing of the existing runway. In order to meet cost and sustainability goals for the project, the airport consulted Aviation Renewables on ways to implement ICAO-compliant lighting that would make an impact on both financial savings and the environment.

Aviation Renewables supplied Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, Bahamas with its iSeries retro reflective taxiway edge markers and Solar Series LED wind cones for day and nighttime airfield operations. The ICAO compliant retro reflective edge markers complement existing LED airfield lighting as a redundant taxiway back up marking system in the event of electrical failures with the Solar Series LED Windcones replacing existing electrically powered windcones. The iSeries and Solar Series LED airfield lighting and edge marking solutions help meet LPIA’s energy, maintenance, emergency preparedness and carbon reduction targets.

Windsock Lighting Solution. Aviation Renewables has delivered a Solar Series Permanent LED Windsock Lighting for a surface helipad at a canadian hospital in Manitoba. The constructor was contracted to procure and install a permanent wind cone for the hospital that complies to ICAO Annex 14, Vol2, 5.1.1 for surface helipads. The addition of the new concrete helipad and the internally lit wind cone will provide the air ambulance pilots with a more visible and safe landing zone.

Portable Airfield Lighting. Aviation Renewables has been awarded a contract to supply, deliver and commission two portable LED airfield lighting systems for a central East African Civil Aviation Department. Each portable LED airfield lighting system will consist of LED runway lighting, LED threshold lighting, LED taxiway lighting, LED REILs (Runway End Identifier Lights), LED PAPIs and remote control operating systems. The lights will be housed in portable trailers, which will charge, transport and store the portable LED runway lighting system. In addition to supplying portable LED airfield lighting, Aviation Renewables will be on-site to conduct technical training and commissioning for the civil aviation department personnel and airport operators in order to ensure safe operations, proper system deployment and routine maintenance schedules over the duration of the contract.

Retro Reflective Edge Light Markers for Taxiway and Runway Lighting

Aviation Renewables supplied the Government of NWT with extra tall 36” highly reflective edge light markers (RELMS) to add visibility to taxiway and runway lights in areas subject to large amounts of collected snow. These snowplow markers have reflective sleeves that are easily replaced when required to ensure long product lifespan. The easily installed reflective markers are a small investment to avoid costly damage of lighting equipment from snowplows.
